There’s Security in Being Self-Sufficient

Published by catseyeediting at 4:35 pm under Miscellaneous Edit This

I don’t think there is any worse feeling to experience during college finals week when your computer suddenly crashes without warning. Even when you have made efforts to save a copy of every file on a flash drive or CD, you can’t help but wonder if you might have forgotten to save something twice. Unfortunately, today was my day to experience this panic. My life was on that computer and I will most likely not get it back. Thankfully a copy of my life (while it may not be complete) is on a flash drive, which I intend to keep tucked close to my side.

Now that my anger and frustration has somewhat dissipated, I fully understand my complete and utter dependence upon technology. Interestingly enough, this dependence is what has caused most of our environmental problems. We use and abuse natural resources like they are in unlimited supply. But in reality, nothing is permanent, everything is limited in some way or another. It’s just like how I took my computer for granted. I’ve only had it for two years, so every time I turn it on, I expect it to work properly and quickly. When it didn’t, my world was turned upside down, and I had to try and solve the problem and think of alternative ways I could get to a computer today to do my work.

My advice to you is to try to be more self-sufficient. So if you have the ability and money to do so, grown your own food, install solar panels on your house, drink water from a well, etc.

I have many times lost valuable information off my computer. It’s horrible! But I have learned not to totally depend on others. I try to grow my own veggies and if I could put up solar panels, I would (I’m renting, they probably wouldn’t like that!)!!

Losing your information is not fun!! Good reminder to other people out there that may not be totally aware. Saving and re-saving is something most all of us are taught, but some (including myself) think, “I don’t need to because it’s not going to happen to me.” I hope everything works out well for your computer!!
